General

Kukai is a browser wallet, which gives it the advantage of being usable on mobile devices, unlike Temple. Opening your Kukai wallet means you are opening a new tab on your browser.

It works on phones and tablets, as well as desktops. Some people prefer it to Temple and some prefer Temple. Both are very good and are both susceptible to issues during popular mints. The jury is out on which one works better more of the time.

To create a new Kukai Wallet, follow the directions for ‘create a new wallet’ on

Kukai supports Ledger, but not Trezor, at the time of writing.

Speed of transaction

Two main factors affect the likelihood of a transaction being successful; gas price and speed of node. Both are addressed below.

Gas fee - modify

If you need to increase the chances of a successful transaction, you can edit the gas fee field. This is only needed when the blockchain is busy and you need to ensure the transaction is handled fast e.g. during a popular mint.

Your wallet will usually suggest a default fee of around 0.0009tez. This won't work for popular mints though. Changing the fee to 0.5tez will give you success in most cases. See the image below for how to manually change it.

There have been some releases in early 2022 where demand far outweighed supply and people used as much as 70tez to secure a piece of art. Crazy. In those releases, the median was 10tez.

Troubleshooting

Occasionally Kukai will have some issues. The main ones seen when using fxhash, and their fixes are:

  1. Warning! Transaction is likely to fail - several reasons this may show:

    1. You don't have enough tez to cover the total cost of the purchase

    2. The item you are trying to buy is no longer available. At the blockchain level, it will know that the transaction cannot work, so it gives you the warning, even though the website looks to still have it for sale

    3. You need to unsync/disconnect your wallet and re-sync/re-connect again.

  2. Your tokens - listed under 'NFT/collectibles' do not show up or do not show up correctly. Much like the old adage ' have you tried turning it on and off again', it is recommended you clear the cache. Go to settings, then select the big scary red button 'clear all token metadata'. This will clear the cache and force a rescan of all your tokens. An image of the step is provided below.

  3. 'Failed' status - not enough tez in your balance or the gas was too low (common on very popular drops).

  4. Pending status - you will always see this at first. If you keep seeing it after several minutes, there could be an issue. If it has been pending for a lot longer, it is likely that the transaction will fail. You should be able to continue sending transactions. If you cannot, clear the cache (see step 2) and then, if it still persists, try changing the node. I recommend using the fxhash node, so in this case, simply switch it back to the main Tezos mainnet. See the image below for an example.

The max gas fee allowed on Kukai is 100 tez. Until recently this was only 10 tez. If you need to use more gas, I recommend using .

You cannot (currently) set a default gas fee on Kukai. For each transaction, the wallet will provide the recommended fee, which is sufficient most times, but during a popular mint where time is critical, manually changing the gas can severely hinder your chances of minting a piece of art. I highly recommend using to get around this problem, BUT it only works with Temple, Airgap and Naan. Not Kukai.

Your wallet connects to a node to conduct its transaction, but unfortunately, some nodes can become busy and slow your transaction down. You cannot currently change nodes with the Kukai wallet. Steps for how to do it with Temple are listed in the of fxhash.
